Blue Demons Sweep Georgetown

CHICAGO Fueled by freshman outside hitter Kyndell Highland's 13 kills and nine digs, the DePaul volleyball team swept Georgetown 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-19) Sunday at McGrath Arena in BIG EAST Conference action. The win snaps the Blue Demons' five-match losing streak as the squad improves to 7-19 and 2-10 in league play. The Hoyas fall to 5-23 and 1-11 in conference play.
The Blue Demons used a balanced attack in their win as they registered a .235 attack percentage on 54 kills, while tallying 61 digs and five total blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Cullen registered her eighth double-double of the season as she finished with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Defensively, junior Caitlin Callaghan paced the floor with 21 digs and freshman libero Charla Drabant chipped in eight. Freshman setter Christy Landschoot and freshman middle blocker Kate Letcher teamed-up to each register three block assists. Landschoot also dished out 42 assists.
Neither team was able to establish itself in the first game as there were 21 ties and eight lead changes. Tied at 24, the Blue Demons took the lead for good on a Hoya attack error and closed out the game on a 5-3 run that was fueled by a pair of kills by Cullen. Cullen and Jacie Fiedler each had four kills in the set.
The Blue Demons strolled to 23-15 advantage in game two, but the pesky Hoyas would not give in and tied the game at 23 by scoring eight unanswered points. Cullen again answered at the end of the game as she served for four straight Blue Demon points and gave DePaul a 28-24 lead.
