CHICAGO - Junior Dunja Antunovic of the DePaul women's tennis team was honored this week as a national recipient of the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association gives the award annually to a women's player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis.
"The Cissie Leary Award is a tremendous honor for Dunja,"Â DePaul head coach Mark Ardizzone said. "In just three years she has given so much to the DePaul family and collegiate tennis as a whole. We are all looking forward to her senior season."
During her junior campaign, Antunovic compiled 22 singles victories with 13 wins in the top match. In three collegiate seasons, she has won 71 singles matches and has participated in 62 doubles victories. She is a two-time member of the BIG EAST All-Tournament team and has reached No. 77 in the ITA national singles poll. During the summer of 2007, she represented Hungary at the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
Antunovic is heavily involved in the DePaul community, serving as Vice President of the DePaul Captains'Â Council while writing for the DePaulia student newspaper. She excels in the classroom as a BIG EAST Academic All-Star and an ITA Scholar Athlete.
The Cissie Leary Award has been given annually by the ITA since 1997 in memory of the late and widely admired Penn women's tennis coach. Throughout her career, Leary used her energy and youthfulness to boost women's tennis at Penn and across the nation. She succumbed to a long battle with scleroderma in November of 1996.
