MALIBU, Calif. While the rest of her team played at the Bronco Invitational in Kalamazoo, Michgan, Dunja Antunovic traveled to the Golden State to participate in the pre-qualifying rounds of the 2008 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Held at Pepperdine’s Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, the tournament features 64 regionally and nationally ranked women from across the country to compete for one of eight spots open in the qualifying draw to be held in later in October.
Antunovic, the senior from Szeged, Hungary, enters the 2008-09 season with a collegiate career total of 130 victories in both singles and doubles play. 2007-08 season highlights include being named to the BIG EAST Conference All-Tournament Team for the second consecutive year, and being awarded the prestigious Cissy Leary Award for Sportsmanship. She ended the season at No. 21 on the ITA Midwest Regional rankings.
Dunja’s high achievements don’t end on the tennis court. Her success in the classroom has been highly recognized both by DePaul and nationally. In 2008, she was the recipient of DePaul’s Jean Nordberg Award for her excellence in leadership, personal character, and academics. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has named her a Scholar-Athlete Award winner, while the BIG EAST has named her to the All-Academic Team every year of her college career.
The first two rounds of singles and doubles play were held on Saturday afternoon. The No. 18 seeded Blue Demon played No. 17 Sarah Woestmann of Kentucky. The two were evenly matched, but Woestmann eventually took the win 7-5, 7-6 (4).
“This is probably won of the most competitive fall tournaments of the season,” Antunovic said following the match, “It is exciting to face this level of competition so early on.”
Antonovic will rejoin the rest of her squad on Oct. 10-12 for the Wildcat Invitational held in Evanston, Ill.
