CHICAGO - During the entire month of October, hundreds of high schools and universities from across the country have been teaming up with The Side-Out Foundation to host "Dig Pink," a volleyball match to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. DePaul Athletics will be teaming up with the DePaul Chapter of Colleges Against Cancer to host a Dig Pink match at McGrath Arena on Fri., Oct. 23. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to show support for breast cancer research, or can purchase a pink DePaul t-shirt at the match, while supplies last, for a $10 dollar donation. In addition, raffle tickets will be on sale for five dollars, or five for $20. Prizes include pink volleyballs, jerseys, t-shirts, and other DePaul gear. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
DePaul joins more than 850 high schools and universities in 2009 that are participating in the annual event, and collectively have already raised nearly $200,000.
The Side-Out Foundation (Side-Out) was established in 2004 by a group of individuals drawn together by their love of volleyball, but who also share a similar passion to be a part of the war against breast cancer. Side-Out's mission is to raise money for the war against breast cancer through the recreational activity of volleyball.
The Blue Demons, who will be sporting pink jerseys, are led by senior outside hitter Sarah Cullen, who has accumulated 246 kills this season. Her 3.15 kills-per-game (kpg) ranks 11th in the BIG EAST, while she also leads the team with 237 digs. Also driving the offensive attack for the Blue Demons are freshman Chandler Carney and sophomore Lauren Blasi, who have combined for 284 put aways.
Noting Notre Dame
The Irish puts their perfect league record on the line, winning the first seven conference competitions of the season. Serenity Phillips touts a 3.69 kpg average, with 225 total kills. DePaul and Notre Dame have met on 15 occasions dating back to the 1983 when the Blue Demons took a 2-0 decision. The Irish lead the all-time series 11-4 and have walked away with the 'W' the last seven matches.
