Women's Track Places Seventh at the Chicagoland Championships

CHICAGO The DePaul women’s track team finished the Chicagoland Championships today, placing seventh overall. Kyra Coffey and Meredith Klein each stood at the top of the podium in their events, while Virginia MacFabe earned a BIG EAST Conference qualifying mark. In addition, Brad Millar competed in the hammer throw at the Sun Angel Track Classic in Tempe, Ariz. and finished his day in fourth place with an NCAA Regional qualifying distance.
Despite the cold and windy Chicago weather, Coffey was able to overcome the adversity and placed first in the 400m with a time of 1:00.40. Laura Wilson clocked in at 1:05.09 to finish in ninth.
Klein tallied her second first-place finish of the season, winning the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:07.23. Lauren Bales placed ninth with her time of 1:11.60
Earning her first BIG EAST qualifying mark in the hammer throw, MacFabe placed third overall after hitting a distance of 45.19m. The junior also placed in the top-10 in the discus.
Three distance runners placed in the top-1o for the Blue Demons as Stephanie Hughes, Terah Cheatham, and Claire O'Brien checked in at second, fourth and eighth place, respectively. In the 10K, Hughes crossed the line at the 38:48.54 mark. Cheatham posted a time of 12:02.12 in the 3,000m steeplechase, while O’Brien clocked in at 18:56.18 in the 5,000m.
Ivy Moffet was the top DePaul sprinter for the day, having logged a 100m time of 12.70 in the preliminary race to earn a berth in the finals. She ended the finals in seventh place with a time of 12.98. Earlier in the day, Moffett recorded a long jump distance of 5.16m to also place seventh overall.
Cynthia Edwards performed in the triple jump with a sixth place leap of 10.72m.
Overall, the Blue Demons scored 55 points to place seventh as a team. The University of Chicago took home the crown with 149 points.
Meanwhile at the Sun Angel Track Classic, Brad Millar was the lone DePaul student-athlete to compete on day one of the two day event. He posted a preliminary throw of 63.94m before logging a final throw of 64.79m to complete the day in fourth place. Both marks meet the NCAA Regional qualifying standards. In addition, the 64.79m distance bettered his previous personal record by over a meter. Winning the hammer throw was LSU’s Walter Hemming, who took home the crown after throwing a distance of 71.75.
The Sun Angel Track Classic resumes tomorrow afternoon, while a portion of the men’s squad take its turn at the Chicagoland Championships in the morning.
