No. 45 Blue Demons Breeze Through Conference Quarterfinals

TAMPA, Fla. The No. 45 DePaul women’s tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Conference Championships after a 4-0 win today over Syracuse. The Blue Demons improve to 20-4 while snapping the Orange’s eight-match winning streak.
The team quickly tallied the doubles’ point, posting wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. Anna Redecsi and Selma Salkovic triumphed over Emily Harman and Christina Tan, 8-1, to improve their season record to 21-3. Katarina Milinkovic and Gia McKnight clinched the point after beating Simone Kalhorn and Alessondra Parra, 8-2. Dunja Antunovic and Kirsten Gambrell were all tied up at five games apiece with Chelsea Jones and Ashley Spicer when their match was suspended.
The Blue Demons used wins in the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 6 singles matches to win the race to four points. Antunovic defeated Harman, 6-1, 6-1, while Redecsi beat Tan, 6-3, 6-0. Milinkovic picked up 6-0, 6-1 win against Chelsea Jones from the No. 6 match.
The remaining matches in progress were not finished after the team win had been clinched. Salkovic had won her first set versus Kalhorn, but was down by a single game in the second when play was suspended. Sandra Zmak was also up a set, while McKnight had split sets with Ashley Spicer.
The team continues the conference tournament tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CST) against No. 6 seed Louisville. The Cardinals upset the No. 3 seeded USF earlier today, 4-1. The winner of tomorrow’s dual advances to the finals to face No. 1 Notre Dame/No. 5 Rutgers.
