Hello!
Wednesday was a long day for the Hungarian tennis, table tennis and fencing team. Our bus left Budapest at 6 a.m. and arrived to Belgrade at 12:30 p.m. due to the long wait at the border. Our security on the road was ensured by a police car that was leading our way to the capital of Serbia. After getting our accreditations, we we had our Demon-Reunion with Kaca (Milinkovic) in the cafeteria, of course. Where else would the tennis team be?
Ancsi and I only had time to briefly greet our gymnast roommate, Laura, who is tinier than Jill Hollembeak (former gymnast and current member of the DePaul Athletic Academic Advising squad), if you can imagine that. We had to meet for the opening ceremony at 4:20 p.m., even though it did not officially start until 8 p.m. Those were long hours of waiting, walking, waving to the kids standing by the road, and waiting again. Some teams could not sit still in the Belgrade Arena, so they made some noise by singing, clapping and occasionally dancing while we waited for all the teams to get to the Arena.
The opening ceremony was visually very appealing. The hosts did not only focus on the athletic component of the games. The theme of the ceremony was revolving around the contributions of well-respected scientists, such as Nikola Tesla. We did not only hear about their contributions, but we also heard inspirational and educational quotes from people who made a positive difference in the world. The only problem was that the program finished very late. By that time the athletes were exhausted. Of course, the organizing committee could not have known that 10:20 p.m. is way past the DePaul women's tennis team's bedtime.
We do not have any information on the order of the play for tomorrow yet, but we are expecting it to come out soon.
More to come.
Go Demons!
