
The Blue Demons Stumble Against the Golden Eagles

CHICAGO- The DePaul volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-13, 25-23) BIG EAST Conference match to Marquette, Saturday afternoon at McGrath Arena. The Blue Demons fall to 3-20 and 0-8 in the BIG EAST while the Golden Eagles improve to 14-7 and 5-2 in conference play.
Katherine Knutson led the Blue Demons defensively with 13 digs, while freshman Chelsea Kirkpatrick led the team with 11 kills.
The fast paced first set, started with the teams battling for every point. Neither team was able to capture a lead of more than two. DePaul used its first timeout when Marquette took a 19-18 lead. DePaul then scored the next three points forcing the Golden Eagles to take a timeout of their own. Out of the timeout, Marquette was refocused and went on a 5-2 run and closed the set 25-23.
Marquette took the first four points to begin the second set. DePaul countered with a 7-3 run that was fueled by great serves from Sammy Geiger and Knutson. The teams then battled back and forth for each point. With the set tied at 20, Marquette called a timeout; out of the timeout DePaul went on a 5-1 run to close the set. The Blue Demons had a match-high .324 (13-4-34) team attack percentage in the third set. Geiger led DePaul offensively with five kills.
Unable to find an offensive rhythm in the third set, the Blue Demons only tallied six kills. The Golden Eagles collected 17 kills and had a .394 (6-4-27) team attack percentage. Marquette closed the third set 25-18.
The Blue Demons jumped out to any early 6-3 lead in the fourth set. Marquette bounced back into the set and used a .256 team attack percentage to win the fourth set 25-23.
DePaul returns to McGrath Arena tomorrow for a match against Syracuse at 2 p.m.
Notes: Katherine Knutson has recorded double-digit digs in 19 matches this season... recorded 13 digs in the match against Marquette... freshman Chelsea Kirkpatrick has been in double-digit kills nine times this season... Kirkpatrick led Blue Demons with 11 kills against Marquette.
