CHICAGO - Alex Mangan is a heads-up performer---both on the soccer field and in the classroom.
The senior forward's dangerous header shot has enabled him to become one of the top goal scorers in DePaul men's soccer history.
His acumen in the classroom was recognized on Tuesday when Mangan was selected for the 2010 CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District First Team.
Mangan, who carries a 3.86 grade-point average in graduate school, will now be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
The Academic All-America Team for men's soccer will be announced on Nov. 17.
Mangan leads the Blue Demons in goals with six and in points with 14. He also has three game-winning goals.
Going into Thursday's BIG EAST Conference Championship first-round match at Connecticut, Mangan's 26 career goals ties him for fifth all-time with Cedric Thompson (1992-95). Mangan's 56 career points ties him for seventh all-time with Thompson.
His athletic and academic prowess along with his dedication to community service have made him a top-10 national finalist for the prestigious Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
That award is given to the top all-around men's and women's senior soccer player in the country. The men's award will be presented at the NCAA College Cup Dec. 10-12 at UC Santa Barbara.
Majoring in Organizational Communications in graduate school, Mangan is a four-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. Last year he was named to the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) All-Scholar Region First Team.
