CHICAGO - For the second time this month, a DePaul freshman has earned the BIG EAST's Rookie of the Week honor with Cleveland Melvin grabbing the recognition today. Fellow rookie Brandon Young picked up the league's weekly honor on Dec. 6. Today's award marks the first time at DePaul that two freshmen have been named Rookie of the Week by the BIG EAST in the same season.
Melvin scored 23 points to lead DePaul over Florida Atlantic last week in DePaul's only game of the week. He added four rebounds to his career-high scoring total along with two steals, a blocked shot and an assist in 27 minutes of action. Midway through the first half Melvin personally outscored Florida Atlantic, 13-12.
He finished the game going 9-for-17 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line and reached double-figures for the fifth straight game.
Melvin follows Young, Wilson Chandler and Dar Tucker to earn BIG EAST Rookie of the Week recognition for DePaul. Chandler picked up the award twice during the 2005-06 season and Tucker received the recognition once during the 2007-08 campaign. Young was named the league's Rookie of the Week earlier this month.
DePaul opens BIG EAST play Tuesday night at Cincinnati. Tipoff at Fifth Third Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on ESPN3.com and heard on WSCR 670 The Score with Zach Zaidman and Laurence Holmes.
