Blue Demon Throwers to Compete at Billy Hayes Invitational
5/6/2010 12:00:00 AM | TRACK AND FIELD
To receive an invitation to the preliminary round of the NCAA Championship, a student-athlete must rank in the top-48, based on a season-best performance list, within their region. In lieu of the four regional meets used in the past, two sites, one in Austin, Texas, the other in Greensboro, N.C., will serve as the venue for two opening preliminary rounds. The top 12 from each site advance to the National Semifinal the following weekend in Eugene, Oregon.
Currently, 10 Blue Demons are positioned to compete in 11 events at the championship prelims, including the four student-athletes competing this weekend.
Nedow and Babciz enter the men's shot put at 3:15 p.m. (CST) within the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex. Nedow, who placed fourth at the BIG EAST Championship, currently ranks 15th in the West Region behind a season-best throw of 17.67m, while Babicz sits at No. 42 with his season-best throw of 16.84.
Kovacs and Fraser get things started at 5 p.m. with the hammer throw. Fraser, in addition to winning her second javelin title at the league championships, placed fourth at the conference meet. Her season-best throw of 55.54m puts her at 37th on the regional performance list.
The men continue action at 5:30 p.m. with the discus throw. Nedow resides just outside the top-48, at No. 55 with his personal-record throw of 51.11m logged at the BIG EAST Championship.
Kovacs concludes her evening with the shot put and discus throw. Last weekend the sophomore extended her personal bests in both events, and placed fifth in the discus to score four team points in addition to the eight she scored in the javelin. In the West Region, she sits on the bubble in 42nd place.
Following the Billy Hayes Invitational, the Blue Demons host the DePaul Relays at Lane Stadium on Tues., May 11.
