
DePaul Falls to Miami

Oxford, Ohio - The DePaul volleyball team lost its opening match of the Miami Best Western invitation, 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 25-19) to the host, Miami. Kate Letcher led the Blue Demons with 11 kills and had a hitting percentage of .348 (11-3-23)
The first set began with Miami and DePaul trading points to a 9-9 tie. From there, the Redhawks would go on a 12-5 run and forced the Blue Demons to use their second timeout. Out of the timeout, DePaul was able to get back to back kills from Kyndell Highland to make the score 16-21. But, Miami would close the set 18-25.
The Blue Demons were led by senior Christy Landschoot and freshman Anastasiya Shutava in the second set. Landschoot was responsible for all 10 of DePaul assists in the second set and Shutava led the team with four kills. The Blue Demons started the set with more energy and were able to get the first two points. The set would stay close until DePaul started a 9-4 run at 8-7. From there DePaul would control the set and would end it at 25-20 on an Allyson Rooks kill.
In the third set, Molly Creek had a .375 (4-1-8) attack percentage and Letcher had four of her 11 kills. The score was close in the beginning. As the set continued the Blue Demons struggled offensively and only managed .160 (9-5-25) attack percentage. The Redhawks would win the set 17-25.
The Blue Demons were led by Letcher who came up with a .750 attack percentage in the fourth set. The Blue Demons could not get any momentum going in the fourth set. DePaul fought for every point and despite having a better attack percentage, .226 (10-3-31), than Miami the Blue Demons fell 25-19 to end the match.
The Blue Demons return to play tomorrow at the Miami Best Western Invitational and play Indiana at noon and Illinois State at 4 p.m.
