Fargas' Run at ITA Midwest Regional Ends in the Semifinals

COLUMBUS, Ohio - DePaul freshman Patricia Fargas is quickly making a name for herself in the collegiate women's tennis world. The Blue Demon freshman became just the third women's tennis player in DePaul's program history to reach the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regional Main Singles Draw.
"I am really proud of the great run Patricia had," head women's tennis coach Mark Ardizzone said following Fargas' day and run at the regional.
Fargas began her day by defeating No. 49 Belinda Nui in straight-sets to advance to the semifinals on Monday at Ohio State's Varsity Tennis Center.
DePaul's fierce and fearless freshman dominated her quarterfinal match, topping Nui from Northwestern, 6-4, 6-4. The win was Fargas' second over a ranked opponent in her last three matches.
Fargas then moved onto the semifinals where she met No. 58 Brittany Wowchuck, her second Northwestern opponent of the day. The Blue Demon freshman, who had left everything out on the court in her previous three matches, was out of gas and fell to Wowchuck 6-1, 6-1.
"Give all the credit to Brittany," Ardizzone said. "She played one of the best matches I have ever seen her play. I think Patricia was maybe a little tired, but Brittany (a junior) had been in that moment before and experience definitely paid off."
Fargas became just the third DePaul women's tennis player to reach the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regional Main Singles Draw. Anna Redeci (2007-10) reached the semifinals in 2009 and Dunja Antunovic (2005-09) advanced in 2008, both in their senior seasons.
During the Regional, Fargas defeated Nicole Chiricosta from Bowling Green (7-6 (5), 6-1), No. 87 Jennifer Kellner from Notre Dame (6-2, 3-6, 6-2) and now Niu. The Blue Demon standout improves to 7-3 on the season.
"This was a great weekend for Patricia. She now knows what 'that' level looks like and knows what she needs to do to stay at that level and even move higher."
"Patricia is a work in progress. She knows what she needs to get better and will get better," Ardizzone said in closing.
The Blue Demon team returns to the courts Nov. 4-6 at the Bronco Invitational. The tournament is DePaul's final of the fall season. The Blue Demons open their spring season, by competing at the Northwestern Invitational, Jan. 14-16 in Evanston.
