CHICAGO - DePaul head volleyball coach Nadia Edwards announced today that Phuong Luong has joined the Blue Demons staff as an assistant coach.
"I am truly excited for Phuong to join the Blue Demon family," Edwards said about the addition to her support team. "He will be a tremendous addition to our staff. Phuong has played a key role in a lot of successful programs nationwide and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from his past opportunities to DePaul."
Luong comes to DePaul after nearly 15 years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at various Division I institutions. Most recently, Luong served in those roles for five seasons at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C. At GWU, Luong was primarily responsible for the team's offensive systems, individual and team defenses, and recruiting. During the 2009 season, Luong helped his team to achieve top-five numbers in 15 different statistical categories in Gardner-Webb's all-time history.
Edwards continued, "Phuong will have an opportunity to train setters, work with offensive systems and serve as our recruiting coordinator. I am looking forward to the journey ahead of us as we enter the season with our new staff."
Prior to his time at GWU, the Ferris State University graduate assisted at East Tennessee State, Wyoming, Northeastern, and New Hampshire. At ETSU, Luong helped to lead his team to the postseason in 2003, 2004, and 2005 and coached the team to school records in kills, assists, and assists per game.
Luong also served as the head coach for the Division III Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball program for two seasons, capturing the conference championship in 1999.
The Michigan native built up a strong résumé in his playing career. In the spring of 1995, Luong graduated from Ferris State with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management and a minor in finance. Following his four seasons competing for Ferris State's competitive men's club team, Luong went on to compete in the United States Volleyball Association Silver Division, the Midwest Professional Volleyball Association, and the Baystate Games in Boston. Luong also played with the Grand Rapids AAU Junior Olympic Elite Team from 1989-1990. While attending FSU, Luong also served as a graduate assistant coach for the university's women's volleyball program.
The Blue Demons kick off their 2011 campaign at the UniWyo Wyoming Invite in Laramie on August 26 and 27 when they will face Oregon State, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Gonzaga. DePaul will return to Chicago the following weekend for the Chicagoland Challenge hosted by UIC before the Blue Demons' home opener against Montana State on September 4 at the McGrath-Phillips Arena.
