LARAMIE, Wyo. - The DePaul volleyball team came up short in its quest for its second victory of the season on Saturday afternoon after falling in straight sets to Gonzaga at the UniWyo Invitational. Although the Blue Demons (1-2) battled closely with the Bulldogs (2-1), early deficits proved to be insurmountable.
Through the first 35 points of the opening frame, DePaul never trailed Gonzaga by more than three points. Freshman Amy Lanski and junior Rachel Aumann provided much of the initial offense as Lanski posted three kills and Aumann tallied five. When the Bulldogs hit the 20 point mark, however, they pulled away. As a team, Gonzaga hit at a .400 attacking percentage in the first set en route to a 25-18 final.
The second set saw the score level on nine separate occasions as both squads fought to take the lead. Untimely errors and a staggering Gonzaga defense combined to limit the Blue Demons to a -.027 attacking percentage in the frame. After the teams knotted the score at 10-10, DePaul could not keep the Gonzaga offense at bay as the Bulldogs went on a 15-7 run to close out the set.
In a 2-0 hole, the Blue Demons got out to a quick 5-2 lead on the Bulldogs but Gonzaga managed to pull it back even. Both teams went back and forth until Gonzaga went on a 7-1 run to stretch its lead to 17-11. With match point coming at 24-16, the Blue Demons tallied three straight points to pull within five but a kill by Gonzaga's Laura Day gave the Bulldogs a 25-19 win in the third set to polish of a three-set sweep.
DePaul will conclude the UniWyo Invitational on Saturday night as it takes on host Wyoming at 8 p.m.
Notes: Freshman Mariah Truscinski led the Blue Demons with 14 digs...Kelsey Bowler chipped in with 13...Sammy Geiger hit .429 on the day (four kills and one error in seven chances)...Geiger also notched 23 assists...Lanski registered eight kills.
