CHICAGO - In their second match of the four-team DePaul Invitational, the Blue Demon volleyball team came up short against visiting San Diego State as the Aztecs took it in three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-14, and 25-19. DePaul fell to 3-9 in non-conference play while SDSU improved to 5-2.
The Aztecs opened the contest with five consecutive points before a service error gave DePaul control. Freshman Amy Lanski recorded her first of a match-high nine kills for the Blue Demons' second point but San Diego State's defense rebounded to hold DePaul to a .043 hitting percentage in the initial frame. The early deficit proved to be too much for the Blue Demons to overcome as they fell 25-14 in the set.
DePaul kept the second set close despite committing seven attack errors in the frame. Down 11-6, the Blue Demons tallied three straight points with freshman Mariah Truscinski serving before the Aztecs' Paije Pearson halted the rally with a kill that started a 14-3 SDSU run. The streak pushed the Aztecs to set point where they finished it off at 25-14 with another Pearson kill.
It was in the third set, however, that DePaul once again displayed its resiliency. The Blue Demons broke out with two points to open the frame and the two squads went back-and-forth to keep it tight. Lanski, who batted down four kills in the set, used a Kelsey Bowler assist to put DePaul up 7-5. The Aztecs answered with two to tie it up at seven-all. SDSU's Emily Harris and Pearson combined for three straight to put San Diego State back on top. With the Aztecs leading 22-16, DePaul fought to bring it back to 22-18 before SDSU could put it away with a 25-19 final set.
The Blue Demons return to action tonight at 7:30 p.m. when they take on the Kansas Jayhawks for a "WHITE OUT" match at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The first 100 DePaul students in attendance will receive a free "WHITE OUT" t-shirt.
