CHICAGO - Coming off its first BIG EAST Conference victory of the season last Sunday, the DePaul volleyball team looks to continue those winnings ways as it welcomes Louisville and Cincinnati this weekend to the McGrath-Phillips Arena. The Blue Demons will take on the Cardinals first on Friday at 7 p.m. before facing off against the Bearcats on Sunday at 2 p.m.
After dropping in a five-set heartbreaker last Saturday against Villanova, the Blue Demons (4-11, 1-1 BIG EAST) rebounded with a compelling five-set win over Georgetown on Sunday. Down two sets to one, DePaul rallied back to take the fourth and fifth sets in convincing fashion and snag its first BIG EAST win of the 2011 campaign.
Freshman Amy Lanski rattled off 11 kills in that match while Anastasiya Shutava swatted down 10 kills to just two errors for a .348 hitting percentage. Junior Rachel Aumann also led on the Blue Demons offense as she tallied nine kills with just two errors for a .368 attacking percentage. DePaul held the Hoyas to a .138 mark as a team. The Blue Demons also showed up big on the defensive front as they registered 15 total blocks in the contest (six solo blocks), the fifth-most blocks in a single match in program history.
Louisville, who has won the BIG EAST tournament in each of the last three seasons, enters the Friday contest with a 10-4 record overall. Last weekend, the Cardinals took down St. John's and Connecticut in 3-0 sweeps to garner their first two conference victories. Louisville, led by head coach Anne Kordes and reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Lola Arslanbekova, has not fallen to DePaul since 2001.
On Sunday afternoon, DePaul invites Cincinnati to McGrath-Phillips Arena for an afternoon matchup. The Bearcats enter the contest with a 10-6 overall record and a 2-0 mark in conference play. Both of Cincinnati's wins also came in three-set sweeps of Connecticut and St. John's last weekend. The Bearcats are currently riding a 10 game winning streak over the Blue Demons.
The Blue Demons will host a Volleyball Kidz Club Clinic in the McGrath-Phillips Arena following the match against Cincinnati. The Kidz Club Clinic is a 90-minute skills clinic that costs $10 for a single session. The cost includes admission to one home match, a Kidz Club T-shirt and a pizza party. All participants are invited to come back to showcase their skills on Friday, October 21, for the DIG PINK match.
