Track and Field Heads to Notre Dame for Invitational

CHICAGO - Looking to continue their recent success, the DePaul men's and women's track and field teams travel to Notre Dame on Saturday, Jan. 21, for the Notre Dame Invitational. The Blue Demons are scheduled to compete against BIG EAST Conference opponents USF and Notre Dame, in addition to Michigan State and Western Michigan.
Coming off a solid meet at the Badger Track Classic last Saturday, the Blue Demons travel to Notre Dame for the second of three times during the indoor season. The Blue Demons previously competed at the Blue and Gold Invitational hosted by the Fighting Irish on December 2 and are scheduled to compete in the Alex Wilson Invitational on March 2.
Badger Track Classic Recap
Last Saturday, Jan. 14, the Blue Demons competed at the Badger Track Classic hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
After setting and re-setting the DePaul shot put record in the Blue Demons' previous two meets, senior Tim Nedow looks to win his third straight shot put event. Nedow took first place with a 19.59 meter throw-the third best throw in the nation so far this season-earning in the process his second straight BIG EAST Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week honor. Sophomore Matt Babicz also looks to further his success as he notched a personal-best throw of 17.47 meters last week, earning him third place.
On the track, freshman Jordon Vaughn could potentially pick up his third straight win this Saturday in the men's 60 meter after edging his opponents in both the Blue and Gold Invitational and the Badger Track Classic. Fellow freshman Ayesha Ewing also took home first place in the Badger Track Classic 60 meter dash, winning the women's race by fractions of a second.
Junior Lindsey Holden also grabbed an individual win last week thanks to her 25.90 time in the 200 meter. Holden was also a part of DePaul's first-place 4x400 meter relay team. That squad included Holden, freshman Jacqueline Kasal, and sophomores Rebecca Adamcheck and Elizabeth Jefferson.
Freshman Loreal Curtis, who lost to Holden in the 200 meter by one-hundredth of a second, was DePaul's final individual winner. The Houston, Texas, native placed first in the women's 400 meter dash as the only competitor to come in under a minute-finishing with a time of 58.74.
Blue and Gold Invitational Recap
Before the new year began, DePaul traveled to Notre Dame for the Blue and Gold Invitational on December 2. There, the Blue Demon men's and women's throwers opened in convincing fashion. On the men's side, senior captain Nedow threw for a first-place distance of19.51 meters on just his second attempt. The distance qualified Nedow for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Of his five throws, only one--his first--came in at under 18.7 meters. No other competitor reached even the 17-meter mark. DePaul senior Babicz came closest, however, taking home second in the event with a BIG EAST Conference qualifying mark of 16.87 meters.
On the women's side, fellow senior captain Kovacs took home first place in not only the shot put event, but in the weight throw as well. Her 14.51 meter throw in the shot put was both a BIG EAST qualifier and a personal-best. In the weight throw, Kovacs edged out DePaul freshman Jazmyne Durrah for the top distance. Kovacs registered a 17.08 meter throw while Durrah, a Chicago native, notched a 17.07 meter distance. Both qualified for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships in March along with senior captain Melissa Fraser, who registered a 15.94 meter weight throw.
The first place showings by Nedow and Kovacs earned each of them BIG EAST Conference Field Athlete of the Week awards. Other first place finishers in the meet included freshman Jordon Vaughn who captured the top spot in the men's 60 meter dash and sophomore Chris Miedema who earned first in the one-mile run.
