EVERGREEN PARK, Ill. - The DePaul volleyball team fell in its second match of the day at the 2012 Chicago Classic on Saturday, September 8, losing another 3-0 decision (25-22, 25-16, 26-24) - this time to local foe UIC.
The Blue Demons are now 3-5 heading into a final match tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 9 against Oregon State at 11:00 a.m. UIC improved to 4-5 overall after dropping its first match of the day against the Beavers.
For the second straight match the DePaul attack was led by Vesela Zapryanova, who led all players with 16 kills and notched her third double-double of the season with 13 digs. Freshman Callie Huebener also contributed 14 kills as both outside hitters upped their numbers from the morning session.
UIC never hit less than .269 in the match and committed just eight errors, making it tough for the Blue Demons to create many runs.
DePaul did get off to a scorching start, however, leading 4-0 in set one off two straight aces by Zapryanova. A block by Abbie Fleener and Natalie Rizzo followed by a well-struck kill by Rizzo out of a UIC timeout made it 6-0 before the Flames got on board via a service error. Leading 7-2, the Blue Demons put together another three-point burst punctuated by a Huebener kill and Fleener ace.
The eight point lead would be the Demons largest, however, as UIC started their comeback trailing 15-10 with a six-point swing to take the lead for the first time. The Flames would never relinquish the lead once out in front, taking a nail-biter 25-22.
Set two was tied as late as 9-9 before UIC put together a 5-1 run to lead at 14-10 and DePaul would get no closer than three the rest of the way, as UIC took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
In set three, the Blue Demons led briefly at 2-1 off a kill by Rizzo but would fall behind after a two-point run by UIC. DePaul wasn't done, however, as the Demons battled back - after trailing by as many as six - to tie the set at 22-22 on a Huebener kill. After falling behind again, Zapryanova knotted the score again at 24 with a kill, but back-to-back errors would close out the match.
Notes: Junior libero Allyson Rooks tied a career-high with 16 digs... the Blue Demons fell to 1-3 on neutral courts and 1-2 in three set matches...
