Blue Demon Volleyball Defeated at Butler, 3-0

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Abbie Fleener posted a team-high 10 kills, but DePaul volleyball lost its sixth straight match, 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-11), at Butler on Saturday inside Hinkle Fieldhouse.
With the setback, DePaul drops to 15-9 overall and 1-9 in the BIG EAST Conference. Butler, which got double-digit kills from three different players and hit .377, improved to 19-6 and 6-4 overall in league play.
Fleener's 10 kills led the Blue Demons, who also got seven kills from Natalie Rizzo. Callie Huebener had a team-high eight digs.
In the opening set the Blue Demons hit .519 and played errorless volleyball (14-0-27), but Butler was able to prevail by hitting .412 and putting the set away with a timely six-point run. DePaul led in the set, 14-12, before a BU spurt turned the momentum around. The Blue Demons would get back to within one, 20-19, on a kill by Fleener but were unable to close out the set as Butler pulled off a 25-22 win.
In the second set, DePaul hung tough early and led at 5-4 after a kill by Randi Leath. The score was 12-8 in favor of Butler, however, when the Bulldogs grabbed control of the set with a seven point run and eventually ran their lead to 22-9. The Blue Demons answered with a long rally on Rizzo's serve, getting as close as 23-16 before BU took two of the next three points to go up 2-0 in the match.
BU clinched the win in a deciding third set with another long run, this time running out to a 9-3 lead with six straight points on its way to a 25-11 win.
DePaul returns home to McGrath-Phillips Arena on Friday, November 8 hosting St. John's at 3:00 p.m.
