CHICAGO - On the bright side of a blustery, cloudy Saturday afternoon in October---DePaul held BIG EAST adversary Butler scoreless for 110 minutes.
Unfortunately, the Blue Demons couldn't find the back of the net in a 0-0, double-overtime tie at Wish Field.
Twice, DePaul (4-7-3, 1-3-1) came oh, so close to coming out on top.
In a second-half scramble in front of the Butler goal, Simon Megally just needed to get any part of his body on the ball and direct it into a wide-open net.
He couldn't quite manage the finishing touch.
In the final minute of the first overtime, Alessandro Thomas had a great look from 25 yards out and sent a ball headed right to the upper 90 of the far post with 6-foot, 5-inch Butler goalkeeper Eric Dick positioned on the near post.
"I thought I had it," Thomas said. "It curved just a little at the last second."
Erik Rodriguez also barely missed connecting on a ball 12 yards out in the middle of the box.
"I thought Simon Megally was great on the ball," said DePaul coach Craig Reynolds. "He tried to get the ball through to his teammates and connect with Erik. Hans Wustling did a terrific job on the outside with his crosses.
"Brian Hindle did a great job for us in a physical game, setting the tone for our team. His emotional play got his teammates fired up. And I thought Kevin Beyer was really effective in the midfield. They both did very well as our holding mids.
"Once we got in the attacking zone, we tried to keep the ball and find that good, forward pass. Butler (5-5-4, 1-3-1) was good on the final play."
DePaul's defense matched the Butler unit with Jalen Harvey being effective moving to the back from the midfield while Caleb Pothast, Jake Douglas and Wustling joined him in front of goalkeeper Mack Robinson.
"We did well to keep the zero against a Butler team with a couple of talented forwards (David Goldsmith, Jeff Adkins)," Blazer said. "Mack made some very good saves, and I was encouraged by the way we played."
DePaul is back in action next Saturday with a 6:30 p.m. BIG EAST match at St. John's.
