
Volleyball Swept by Marquette in Season Finale

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - In the final match of the 2014 campaign, the DePaul volleyball team was swept at the hands of Marquette, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-14). The Blue Demons (3-27, 1-17 BIG EAST) were paced by the all-around performance of Colleen Smith who dished out a team-high 22 assists and collected nine digs to go along with five kills.
Caitlyn Coffey landed a team-best eight kills in the three-set match. Saige Gallop followed close behind with seven and also tallied 10 digs.
Defensive specialist Lexi Chanos recorded 14 digs and added five assists.
The Golden Eagles (24-7, 14-4) clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Championship next week behind a double-double from Autumn Bailey. Bailey hit .419 while scorching a match-high 23 kills and totaling 10 digs.
Marquette opened the first frame with a 9-6 run. A kill from Callie Huebener and a dual block by JaQuayla Baker and Huebener brought the deficit down to one, but the Golden Eagles never surrendered the lead. Marquette closed the set with a 16-10 streak capped off by a kill from setter Gabby Benda, 25-18.
The second set proved to be the most difficult with no team in control of the frame as there were a total of 17 ties and six lead changes. Again Marquette would lead 9-8, but DePaul took five of the next eight points behind three kills from Coffey to take a 13-11 lead. The Golden Eagles battled back and tied the set up at 22-22. Marquette strung together a mini 3-0 run on the service of Bailey to take the second set, 25-22.
Coming out of intermission, and up 2-0 in sets, the Golden Eagles asserted their dominance in the third stanza. Marquette opened with a 10-6 run. A kill from Huebener and an ace from Smith would bring the margin down to two, but that was as close as the Blue Demons would get. The Golden Eagles took what proved to be the final set of DePaul's season, 25-14.
Notes: This was the 54th meeting between the programs all-time… DePaul still holds a 28-26 advantage, however Marquette has won the last eight matchups… with a .214 (34-12-103) attacking percentage, the Blue Demons were held under the .250 mark for the 13th time in BIG EAST contests… as a team, DePaul finished with a single-season record of 253 total blocks… Caitlyn Coffey's 2014 campaign goes down as the best in program history with 106 total blocks and 88 block assists… Saige Gallop landed the fifth-most kills in a single season with 339… the 2014 squad totaled the third highest output with 1,341 kills in program history… Colleen Smith finished with the second-best attacking percentage of .393 (115-19-244) in a single campaign… Smith also assisted on 959 plays - the fourth-highest total in a year… with 366 digs this season, Lexi Chanos totaled the sixth-best season in that respective category in a single season.
