CHICAGO - DePaul junior outside hitter Saige Gallop has been named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District Second Team, as voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Gallop is the first player in program history to receive the award.
Six student-athletes were named to the district 5 first team and Gallop was one of six to fill the second team. Joining Gallop in the second team include Oakland's Amanda Baker, Ball State's Hayley Benson, Bowling Green State's Erica Fullenkamp, Ohio's Abby Gilleland and Illinois' Liz McMahon.
In order to qualify for a Capital One CoSIDA academic award, a player must maintain a 3.30 GPA or better and be a significant contributor to the team.
Gallop has been getting it done both on and off the court. In her first season in Lincoln Park, Gallop leads the Blue Demons with 290 kills, ranks second in 92 sets played and has the fourth-highest dig total of 156 all while holding a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Gallop's excellence has continued in BIG EAST play, ranking in the top 10 in kills (137) and kills per set (2.98). The outside hitter's 21 kills in DePaul's second meeting versus Xavier rank as the fourth-highest total in a four-set match in league play. Gallop has picked up two double-doubles in the conference season with one coming against Georgetown (20 kills, 11 digs) and other at Xavier (12 kills, 10 digs).
In the non-conference, Gallop was named to the DePaul Invitational All-Tournament Team, Evansville Invitational All-Tournament Team and the Windy City All-Tournament Team.
Gallop and the Blue Demons return to action tonight in a BIG EAST matchup with Providence. First serve is slated for a 7 p.m. start time. DePaul plays its final home match of the season tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against St. John's.
