Dec. 16, 2014 CHICAGO - DePaul Athletics Director Jean Lenti Ponsetto has announced that Kathryn Statz has been promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director. Statz is in her 13th year at DePaul after joining the staff in August 2002 as Associate Athletics Director.
"Kathryn brings a wealth of experience, having worked in the profession for well over 20 years at the NCAA, in conference offices and on campus. Her commitment to student-athlete success and welfare have been hallmarks of her success at DePaul," said Ponsetto. "During the 13 years she has been with us at DePaul, all of our athletics programs and support services have been enhanced by her contributions. We look forward to her continued leadership."
Statz handles a wide variety of duties with the Blue Demons. She is responsible for the administration of DePaul's varsity sports, oversees NCAA compliance, and is responsible for all contractual matters within the athletics department. She is also a liaison to the DePaul Captains' Council and Athletics Board. Statz also manages BIG EAST championships hosted by DePaul. On campus, she was reappointed to the President's Diversity Council last year, serves on the Sexual Violence Task Force, and completed service on a university-wide task force charged with reviewing the findings of the Freeh Report.
"I love the breadth of responsibilities and experiences that I have here at DePaul and the colleagues from whom it allows me to learn on a daily basis," said Statz. "As our programs continue to improve, it is incredibly rewarding to see the impact that it has upon our student-athletes, coaches and staff as they come to more fully recognize the mission of the university."
Statz came to DePaul after spending eight years at Marquette University, where she served as an assistant athletics director for Olympic sports, marketing and compliance. In her duties with the Golden Eagles, she coordinated the initial recruiting and eligibility certification process, oversaw many of the department's varsity sports programs and served as the department's senior woman administrator and chair of the university's Gender Equity Committee. Statz also was responsible for monitoring NCAA rules compliance.
Statz is a member of the NCAA Degree Completion Consultants Task Force, which awards nearly $1 million in scholarships annually to former student-athletes who completed their eligibility but did not complete graduation requirements. She was also selected to participate in DePaul's Vincentian Heritage Tour in August 2008, walking the steps of St. Vincent in France with 35 other DePaul faculty and staff, and in 2012, was a participant in the Vincentian Mission Institute with 30 colleagues from DePaul, St. John's and Niagara Universities.
Statz earned her bachelor's degree in communications from Mundelein College, where she was also a member of the volleyball and basketball teams. She completed her law degree at Marquette in December 2000 and is a member of the Marquette Sports Law Alumni Board.
