MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - DePaul softball won in dramatic fashion, scoring runs in each of the last three innings to snare a come-from-behind win, 3-2, against Kansas in its final game at the College of Charleston Classic on Sunday at Patriots Point Athletic Complex.
The Blue Demons improved to 7-3 with a third straight win, finishing the weekend tournament 4-1. The loss dropped Kansas to 4-4 overall.
Kirsten Verdun improved to 5-1 in a complete game effort, striking out seven and allowing just one earned run. Junior Mary Connolly paced the offense with a 2-for-3 effort, including her first homer of the season. Freshman Nicole Pihl also posted a 2-for-3 day with a double.
KU got on the board first with an RBI single in the bottom of the second and added a second run on a DePaul error in the home-half of the fourth.
Trailing 2-0, the Blue Demons began their comeback in fifth when Connolly launched a solo shot to center for her first home run of the season.
In the sixth, back-to-back singles with one out by Verdun and Pihl created another scoring opportunity for DePaul. Both hitters were substituted for pinch runners, and with two outs executed a double steal that created the tying run. With Staci Bonezek batting, Ali Lenti took off for third and Gena Lenti broke for second when a throwing error by KU's catcher allowed the lead runner to score.
Connolly led off the seventh with a single before a sacrifice bunt by Brittany Boesel advanced pinch runner Cherelle Chambers. Batting next, Megan Coronado reached on a fielding error by KU which allowed Chambers to come around and give DePaul a 3-2 lead.
The Blue Demons are back in action next weekend at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. DePaul kicks the weekend off with a game against Massachusetts on Friday, Feb. 21 at 10:00 a.m. CT.
Notes: DePaul wins its third straight game... it was the Blue Demons' first come-from-behind win... DePaul had been 0-3 when its opponent scores first... Connolly's home run was the first of her season and third by the Blue Demons this weekend...
