CHICAGO – DePaul softball fell to St. John's 10-1 in five innings in Thursday's series opener at Cacciatore Stadium. The Red Storm used a seven-run fourth inning to break open a close game, moving to .500 in BIG EAST play and improving to 24-12 overall. The Blue Demons dropped their eighth straight contest and moved to 12-23 on the season and 3-10 in league action.
Jolie Adams went 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot, including a one-out triple in the fifth inning, while freshman left fielder Emersyn Coulter also recorded a multi-hit outing with a pair of base knocks. Chelsea Parker drove in DePaul's lone run on a sacrifice fly to left, pushing her season total to 33 RBIs.
Sophomore right-hander Hannah Messer started in the circle for the Blue Demons, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing six runs, four earned, on five hits. Nigey entered in relief in the fourth inning, tossing 2.0 innings and giving up four runs on six hits. Messer fell to 6-11 on the season.
How It Happened
St. John's took an early lead in the second inning, capitalizing on a DePaul error to score the first run of the game and make it 1-0. The Red Storm extended their lead on a wild pitch to go in front 2-0.
Base hits from Morgan Rogers and Coulter, followed by a pair of stolen bases, put two runners in scoring position with one out for the Blue Demons, but they couldn't capitalize, leaving the deficit at two runs after two innings.
DePaul had its best opportunity of the game in the bottom of the third, as a Rogers walk loaded the bases with two outs, but a pinch-hit strikeout left all three runners stranded.
In the fourth, St. John's used a bunt single to extend its lead to 3-0, prompting a pitching change as Messer was lifted for Nigey. The Red Storm broke the game open with a two-out grand slam, taking a commanding 9-0 lead. The visitors added another run in the top of the fifth to make it 10-0.
In the home half of the fifth, Adams delivered a one-out triple, followed by a walk from Alexis Houge. Parker's sacrifice fly to left plated Adams to get DePaul on the board and make it 10-1, which held as the final.
