NEW YORK - Freshman middle blocker Rachel Breault picked up the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award on Monday after leading DePaul to a third-place finish at the DePaul Invitational, Aug. 29-30.
The Bad Axe, Mich. native hit .405 in matches against Stony Brook, Bradley and Hampton. Breault is only the second player in program history to be named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week with Charla Drabant being the other recipient back in 2007.
Playing in all 11 sets over the weekend, Breault averaged 1.73 kills and 1.36 digs per set. The first-year standout ranked fifth in the BIG EAST with an impressive .405 hitting percentage in the three-match span.
Breault added an ace and eight block assists to guide the Blue Demons through their first action of the season.
"Rachel is certainly deserving of this award," said head coach Nadia Edwards. "Receiving Freshman of the Week honors on opening weekend is a true testament to how hard she's been working in practice since preseason has started."
DePaul returns to action Friday at 5 p.m. when it faces Syracuse in the Windy City Invitational, hosted by Chicago State.
