Volleyball Hits the Road to Evansville Invitational

Sept. 11, 2014 CHICAGO - The DePaul volleyball team heads to Evansville, Ind. for three matches in two days, as the Blue Demons (2-4) look to make some noise at the Evansville Invitational, Sept. 12-13.
The tournament consists of four teams, as DePaul is joined on the court by Central Michigan (0-6), Evansville (2-6) and IUPUI (2-6). The opening serve of the invitational is slated for Friday at 5 p.m. as the Blue Demons matchup with IUPUI. On Saturday, DePaul tangles with Evansville at 12:30 p.m. followed shortly by a meeting with Central Michigan at 4 p.m.
The Blue Demons enter the tournament at a 2-4 mark after traveling just down I-95 to Chicago State for the Windy City Invitational last weekend. DePaul dropped its opener against Syracuse in four frames before sweeping Chicago State. The Blue Demons fell in the tournament finale to UIC in four sets.
DePaul was led by a pair of double-doubles from junior setter Colleen Smith. Smith tallied 45 assists and 13 digs against Syracuse and totaled a team-high 32 assists and 19 digs versus UIC. The sensational setter's performance landed her a spot on the Windy City Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Joining Smith on the All-Tournament Team was junior outside hitter Saige Gallop. Gallop landed a team-best 45 kills across three matches. The junior also added 16 digs and three blocks in DePaul's second tournament of the season.
Freshman Myah Reed had her best three-game stretch of the season last weekend. Reed notched 21 kills and chipped in five blocks.
Sophomore JaQuayla Baker ranked third on the team with 17 kills in the tournament. Baker matched Reed with five total blocks, including a four-block performance against UIC.
As a team, DePaul set a single-match high with 53 assists against Syracuse. The Blue Demons also combined for 142 digs throughout the tournament - besting their mark of 128 at the DePaul Invitational.
Series Histories
The Blue Demons have battled with Evansville 12 times in program history. The Aces hold a slight advantage, 7-5. This will be the first matchup between the programs since 2005. IUPUI is ahead in the overall series against DePaul, with the Jaguars winning the latest duel in 2010. DePaul has not faced Central Michigan since 2000, but is currently on a three-game winning streak against the Chippewas.
Scouting the Jaguars
IUPUI comes into the tournament losers in five of their last six games. Junior Kelly Wachtel leads the team with 85 kills with an attack percentage of .248. Defensively, senior Beth Howard leads the Jaguars with 130 digs, averaging 4.48 per set. Sophomore Alexis Mapes owns a team-high 190 assists for IUPUI.
Scouting the Aces
Evansville rolls into the weekend at 2-6 after being defeated by Tennessee on Tuesday evening. The Aces are lead in the attack with a two-pronged
approach. Senior Ashley Ring and freshman Genesis Miranda have totaled 112 and 97 kills, respectively. Ring was named the Missouri Valley Player of the Week retroactive to Sept. 8. At the net, Evansville has outblocked its opponents 79.0-57.5.

Central Michigan makes the trip south in search of its first win of the season. Junior Angelique White leads the team and boasts an impressive .328 attacking percentage. Freshman Jordan Bueter has been an all-around player, leading the club with 226 attacks, 62 attacks and eight service aces.
