Blue Demons Drop BIG EAST Opener at St. John's

With the setback, the Blue Demons drop to 2-11 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST Conference. St. John's improved to 12-5 overall, with a 1-1 record in league play.
Coffey's eight kills led DePaul, who also got seven kills from sophomore JaQuayla Baker.
Junior Colleen Smith provided another all-around performance for the Blue Demons with 16 assists, seven digs and three kills.
Defensively, junior Saige Gallop paced DePaul with seven digs. First-year player Haley Bueser followed close behind Gallop's total with six digs of her own.
The Red Storm controlled the net, outblocking the Blue Demons 13-10. Four different players registered at least three block assists. Karin Palgutova notched 16 kills to lead St. John's offensively. Deniz Mutlugil dished out a match-high 33 assists.
The first set began point-for-point until a dual block from Coffey and Gallop gave DePaul an 8-7 lead. St. John's used a 14-7 to gain the lead and control the set, 21-15. The Blue Demons brought the deficit down to three, before the Red Storm eventually won the set, 25-21.
St. John's used the momentum from winning the first frame to open the second stanza on a 5-0 run. DePaul fought back and tied the set at the 14-14 mark. Both teams traded points until the Red Storm took a two-point lead, 22-20. The Blue Demons used a 3-0 streak, highlighted by a kill from sophomore Randi Leath, to take the lead 23-22. St. John's ended the set scoring seven of the frame's final 11 points and won 27-25.
Coming out of intermission, St. John's put its foot down and raced out to a seven-point lead at the 12-5 mark. DePaul trailed by as many as 13 in the set and could not muster a comeback. St. John's took the final set, 25-12.
The Blue Demons return to the court tomorrow when they travel to Providence to tangle with the Friars. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. as both teams will be looking for their first team conference win.
