CHICAGO ââ'¬" Rallying from a 2-0 deficit to bring home the first BIG EAST Conference win elicited league-wide recognition for the DePaul men's soccer team on Monday.
Simon Megally was honored as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after his two goals---including the game-winning penalty kick---lifted the Blue Demons to a 3-2 victory over Villanova last Saturday at Wish Field.
Jake Scheper was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after his first collegiate goal in the 30th minute kick-started the DePaul comeback. Scheper also had an assist on Megally's first goal that knotted the match at 2-2 in the 50th minute.
Megally drew a foul in the box in the 85th minute and converted the PK to snap a seven-game losing streak and move DePaul into a four-way tie for the final BIG EAST Championship playoff spot.
This was Megally's first weekly award after leading the BIG EAST in goals and points last week.
He evened the score against Villanova with a shot into the middle of the net after passes from Scheper and Erik Rodriguez. In the 1-1-0 week, Megally fired off 10 shots with six on goal.
The junior from Maine South leads DePaul with five goals and 10 points. Megally is tied for second in the BIG EAST in shots and tied for fifth in goals. Teammate Hans Wustling is tied for third in the league in assists.
Scheper's three points with a goal and an assist tied him for second most points in the league last week.
The emerging forward was critical in helping DePaul battle back from the 2-0 deficit. For the rookie from Cincinnati, this was the first weekly award of his career.
DePaul (2-10-0, 1-2-0) will look to even up its league record at a 6 p.m. match Wednesday at Seton Hall (0-9-1, 0-3-0).
