Volleyball Closes Weekend Road Trip with Loss to Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The DePaul volleyball team suffered its second loss of the weekend by falling in straight sets to Villanova, 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18). After the weekend, DePaul drops to 12-5 overall, 1-4 in BIG EAST play and Villanova boosts its record to 13-4, 3-1 in the BIG EAST.
Brittany Maxwell led the Blue Demons attack with a team-high 12 kills and 31 total attempts. Caitlyn Coffey followed with eight kills and just one error on 15 attacks.
Colleen Smith registered 28 assists over the three sets and added five digs.
On the back row, Haley Bueser had a team-high 11 digs, while adding a service ace and two assists.
For Villanova, Gabby Pethokoukis and Allie Loitz secured 14 kills each to lead the Wildcats.
After the first set started with an even 6-6 score, Villanova scored the next three points and grabbed the three-point lead. The Blue Demons stayed tough on the road and eventually brought the score within one after a Coffey kill, 20-19. Villanova was able to hold off DePaul's comeback long enough in the set late to claim the 25th point off a kill by Claire Crutchfield to go up in the match, 1-0.
It was a dramatic second set for both sides in Saturday's match with a total of 16 ties between DePaul and Villanova. The biggest lead over the entire set was just two points by Villanova on multiple occasions. With the score set at 20-18 Villanova, the Blue Demons secured three straight points to earn the 21-20 advantage. The Wildcats tied the match on the next point and took over the lead on a service ace. Despite DePaul tying the match back at 23-23, Villanova took the final two points of the set to win the second frame, 25-23.
In the third set, the Blue Demons controlled the early portion with a two-point lead at 11-9 and 12-10. The two teams saw ties from 12 to 16-all before Villanova rallied for four points to take the 20-16 lead. DePaul used a Maxwell kill to bring the score within three, but it was not enough as the Wildcats scored back-to-back points to win the match with a set score of 25-18.
