Blue Demons Drop Game at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - A grinding game between DePaul and Penn State saw the Nittany Lions hold off the Blue Demons, 68-62, Tuesday evening in the first game of the Gavitt Tipoff Games. Myke Henry led three DePaul players in double-figures with 17 points and nine rebounds.
The Blue Demons started slow allowing Penn State to jump out to an 11-2 lead less than six minutes into the game. DePaul chipped away and Henry tied the game at 23-23 on a rebound and putback with 4:30 to go in the first half.
Following Henry's basket, Penn State outscored DePaul by an 8-2 margin with Brandon Taylor's three-pointer beating the halftime buzzer to give the home team a 31-25 advantage.
Taylor opened the second half with a three before a Garrett driving layup. Taylor's personal run for Penn State continued with another three-pointer that put Penn State up 39-29 less than three minutes into the second half.
The Blue Demons moved to within three points on seven occasions in the second half, but could get no closer. Each time Penn State answered DePaul run and the Nittany Lions never led by more than seven until the final 30 seconds of the game.
Henry just missed his third career double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Billy Garrett Jr. added 14 points while Eli Cain scored 13 with three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Tommy Hamilton IV also pulled down nine boards with seven points.
The Blue Demons are off to the Virgin Islands for the 2015 Paradise Jam. DePaul faces South Carolina on Friday evening at 5 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network. The radio call will be streamed on BlueTube and joined in progress on WSCR 670 The Score at 5:45 p.m. CT.
Postgame Notes: The Blue Demons knocked down a three-pointer for the 678th straight game... DePaul leads the series, 6-1... Tuesday was the first meeting between the two program since December 1984... the Blue Demons are 84-75 all-time against the current lineup of Big Ten programs.
