INDIANAPOLIS - In the final match of the 2015 season, the DePaul volleyball team fell short of a road comeback against Butler Saturday night, 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 24-26, 25-19). DePaul ends the season with a 16-15 overall record and 4-14 in BIG EAST play.
Jasmine King, fresh off a spot on the BIG EAST honor roll, tallied a team-high 15 kills. Caitlyn Coffey notched 13 kills.
Colleen Smith finished the night with a double-double, her second in two nights, after she collected 48 assists and 10 digs.
Tyler Graham picked up 20 digs on the back row to lead the Blue Demons. She was one of five DePaul student-athletes to record double-digit digs.
Anna Logan had a match-high 19 kills for Butler.
After the two teams were tied at 4-4, DePaul grabbed the early lead on the road and built it to as large as four at 15-11 when the Blue Demons capitalized on a Bulldog attack error. Butler called a timeout shortly after the error to slow down the DePaul attack. After the timeout, the Bulldogs slowly climbed back into the set, tied it at 17-all off a Logan kill and took over the lead on the next point. With the set tied at 18-18, Butler rallied for three straight points and gained enough cushion to eventually win the set, 25-22.
In repeat fashion, both teams traded points early in the set to be deadlocked at 4-4, but it was the Bulldogs who jumped to the first big lead. The rest of the set was about big runs for both sides. After DePaul tied the match again, 10-10, Butler rallied for four straight points. The Blue Demons answered by going on a 7-1 run and gaining a two-point lead. Late in the set, a King kill brought DePaul within one of the Bulldog lead, but it was not enough as Butler secured the final two points of the set.
The tightest frame of the night came in the third when neither team could take control of the match. The largest lead of the set was just two points and the two sides were tied late at points 20 through 24. Butler earned set point when Jessica Klingensmith put the Bulldogs up by one with a kill. DePaul responded with a big three-point rally that not only gave it the lead, but also the set when King and Brittany Maxwell slammed the door shut with blocks.
Butler wasted no time in the fourth set, producing a lead of eight midway through the frame. DePaul would cut the advantage to five on five occasions, but the Blue Demons could not complete the comeback. The Bulldogs would go on to win the match on a Logan kill.
