CHICAGO - Stingy defense and an efficient offense allowed DePaul to take control midway through the first half as the Blue Demons coasted to an 82-52 win over Caldwell in an exhibition game on Saturday. Tommy Hamilton IV led the Blue Demons with 13 points as the club tuned up for the season opener next Saturday night against Western Michigan at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
A Darrick Wood jumper put DePaul up 14-5 before Hamilton knocked down one of his three three-pointers for the first double-digit lead of the afternoon at 19-8. Caldwell answered to cut the deficit to nine with 11 minutes left before the Blue Demons opened up the game for good by outscoring the Cougars, 28-11, over the remainder of the first half.
Frederick Scott sparked the run with eight straight points on two three-pointers and a jumper while David Molinari hit the final DePaul bucket of the opening frame to give the Blue Demons a commanding 47-19 advantage.
DePaul's lead in the second half didn't get any lower than 21 points and reached 30 points late in the game as R.J. Curington's three-pointer resulted in the 82-52 final score.
Aaron Simpson added 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench while Peter Ryckbosch recorded nine points and seven boards. Seven different players scored at least seven points against Caldwell with Wood and Scott totaling eight apiece.
