NEWARK, N.J. - Wins on the road in the BIG EAST are precious and the Blue Demons did nearly everything to steal one at Seton Hall, but came up on the short side of a 78-74 score Saturday. Billy Garrett Jr. led three in double-figures with his third straight 20-point game while Myke Henry and Rashaun Stimage added 15 points each.
DePaul started slow and trailed by 10 with just over 12 minutes left in the first half. The Blue Demons answered and two free throws by Peter Ryckbosch knotted the score at 25-25 six minutes later.
The Blue Demons would tie the score two more times over the final six minutes of the first half before Seton Hall (12-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) took a 35-34 advantage at intermission.
Aaron Simpson opened the second half with a three-pointer to give DePaul its first lead of the game. The first two minutes of the second half saw DePaul move ahead briefly before Seton Hall tied the score. Khadeen Carrington hit a free throw for a 42-41 lead that the Pirates would hold over the remainder of the afternoon.
Despite trailing, DePaul (6-8, 0-2 BIG EAST) didn't let Seton Hall get away. Isaiah Whitehead knocked down a three-pointer for a 59-51 lead with 9:23 to go before a Henry jumper and a three from the corner by Darrick Wood jump-started a DePaul comeback.
Trailing by five points with 4:39 on the clock, two buckets in the lane by Eli Cain and a jumper by Wood sandwiched around a Seton Hall basket moved DePaul to within a point at 71-70.
With Seton Hall clinging to a three-point lead in the final minute, the Pirates missed four straight free throws. DePaul capitalized with Garrett getting fouled on a three-point attempt with :00.6 on the clock. Needing to make all three free throws Garrett missed the first and made the second. His third attempt was a forced miss that wasn't converted.
Garrett finished the game with 20 points and eight assists while Henry totaled 15 points and nine rebounds. Stimage added a career-high 15 points to go with five boards for the Blue Demons.
Whitehead led Seton Hall with 18 points and Angel Delgado added 12 points and 12 rebounds.
DePaul returns to Allstate Arena on Tuesday night to face the Butler Bulldogs at 7 p.m. The game can be seen live on FOX Sports Networks including The U Too in Chicago and heard on WSCR 670.
