INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The late first-half run by Butler led to a 10-point deficit for DePaul that it couldn't overcome in a 67-53 loss Wednesday night. Eli Cain and Tommy Hamilton IV led the Blue Demons with 13 points each.
Hamilton's second three of the evening gave the Blue Demons a 17-16 lead midway through the first half. Butler (14-6, 3-5 BIG EAST) answered with three straight three-pointers while DePaul managed a single bucket and the Bulldogs held a 28-19 advantage at the five-minute mark.
The two teams traded baskets over the final five minutes of the first half and the Bulldogs took a 33-23 advantage into intermission.
DePaul (7-13, 1-7 BIG EAST) quickly cut a 10-point halftime deficit to five behind a Hamilton jumper and a three-point play from Myke Henry. Butler responded decisively with a 10-0 run to take a 15-point advantage five minutes into the second half.
The Blue Demons closed to within seven with 8:40 left in the game, but could get no closer as Butler increased its lead 14 over the next two minutes and led, 56-42.
Hamilton went 3-for-4 three-point range while Henry scored 12 points in the second half and early foul trouble forced him to the bench in the first half.
Roosevelt Jones led Butler with 23 points and Kellen Dunham added 16 points.
DePaul returns to Allstate Arena on Saturday for a BIG EAST game against No. 7/8 Xavier. The Blue Demons and Musketeers are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start on CBS Sports Network and WSCR 670 AM.
