Blue Demons Fall in Straight Sets to No. 49 SMU

DALLAS - The DePaul men's tennis team ended its weekend trip to Texas with a loss to No. 49 SMU in straight sets. After the defeat, the Blue Demons move to 2-4 on the year. SMU evens its record to 2-2 in 2016.

In singles play, the matches on courts No. 2-4 finished with the Mustangs on top. DePaul's Alex Galoustian, reigning BIG EAST Athlete of the Week, battled with Samm Butler of SMU on court No. 2. Galoustian's play improved as the match went on, but failed to take a set (6-1, 6-3).

Nathan de Veer had a strong second set against Markus Kerner on No. 3 singles. After dropping set one, de Veer battled with Kerner to make the score 5-4. Unfortunately for the Blue Demons, de Veer could not complete the comeback and lost the second set, 6-4.

The closest match of the afternoon came from No. 6 singles between Conor O'Meara of DePaul and Yates Johnson of SMU. In the first set, the two sides traded points, but it was Johnson who clinched the frame, 7-5. O'Meara was leading in the second set, 5-4, before the match was called.

For doubles play, SMU clinched the point by earning wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles. The DePaul duo of Galoustian and de Veer fell to Nate Lammons and Kerner of SMU on No. 1 (6-3). Sten Leusink and Tim Corwin dropped their contest to SMU's Yates Johnson and Hunter Johnson at No. 2 (6-2). The match between Jan-Willem Feilzer/Paul John (DePaul) and Arkadijs Slobodkins/Ronald Slobodchikov (SMU) went unfinished with a tie score of 4-all.

DePaul returns home to take on Purdue in its next match on Saturday, Feb. 6. The match is set for a 1:15 p.m. CT start.
