NEW YORK - After helping the DePaul volleyball team to a 2-1 record in the week, senior Colleen Smith landed a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, announced Monday by the conference office.
Smith was a big part of DePaul's attacking success in wins over Butler and Seton Hall. She finished the week with 136 assists (10.46 assists/set), 27 digs, six blocks and two double-doubles.
"I am excited for Colleen, this is a well-deserved recognition," said head coach Nadia Edwards. "Since the beginning of the season Colleen has put our hitters in great positions and has distributed the ball quite evenly to our attackers, which makes our offense difficult to predict and defend. Although she is not a large point scorer, she is a huge reason why our offense has been so successful this entire season."
On Wednesday, Smith notched her ninth double-double of the year (at the time) and sixth straight in a five-set win over Butler with 50 assists and 11 digs, helping DePaul hit .270 as a team.
To start the weekend, the setter posted 59 assists and six digs at Seton Hall to lead the Blue Demons to a victory against the Pirates. She assisted in having four Blue Demons reach double-digit kills. Smith earned her 10th double-double of the year against St. John's on Saturday with 27 assists and 10 digs.
"Over a three match week, she helped our team to secure two wins, was great on the defensive end and was a momentum changer from the service line," stated Edwards. "She plays with incredible heart and has truly shown senior leadership this season. We are looking forward to Colleen continuing to run the offense in the same manner as we head into the second round of BIG EAST competition."
The honor roll spot is the first weekly honor for Smith in the 2016 season and the fourth overall for the Blue Demons.
Smith and the Blue Demons are back on the court on Wednesday, Oct. 12 to take on Xavier at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The match between DePaul and Xavier is set for a 6 p.m. CT start.
