Volleyball Drops Weekend Contest to Marquette

CHICAGO - A tight match between DePaul and Marquette Saturday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena went to five sets and fell in favor of the Golden Eagles, 3-2 (23-25, 16-25, 27-25, 25-22, 15-11). DePaul drops to 11-10 on the year and 5-4 in conference play, while Marquette moves to 17-4 and 7-2 in the BIG EAST.
Colleen Smith closed the night with 54 assists, 15 digs and five service aces. The senior setter earned her 12th double-double of the year.
Brittany Maxwell finished with a team-high 20 kills and four service aces. The sophomore also added four total blocks.
Myah Reed and Jasmine King each tallied double-digit kills Saturday night. Reed secured 14 kills, while King had 11.
Marquette started the match winning the first two points, but the Blue Demons rallied back to take an 8-4 lead. The two sides exchanged points for the remainder of the set with 14 ties and seven lead changes. Late in the set, The Blue Demons built a 22-20 lead, which was erased by two errors. Reed registered two kills in the final four points to clinch the first set for DePaul.
The second set was defined by scoring runs from each side. Two kills from Claire Anderson and a Maxwell service ace brought the Blue Demons to an early 7-2 lead. The Golden Eagles utilized a DePaul attack error and pushed to tie the score at seven. The Blue Demons began to rally midway through the set and pulled away from the Golden Eagles. Marquette battled back to 23-16, but it was not enough as Anderson notched a kill and service ace to clinch the second set for DePaul.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in the third. A Reed kill evened the set at 12, but Marquette regained the lead winning the next three points. The Blue Demons pulled within one at 19-18 with a kill from Caitlyn Coffey, forcing Marquette to use a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Marquette went on a 3-0 rally and reached set point at 24-20. A Marquette service error jumpstarted a 4-0 DePaul run to tie the match at 24-all. The teams would tie again at 25-25 before Marquette won the final two points to win the set.
In the fourth set, the teams tied on five occasions before Marquette used a pivotal 8-0 rally to set the score at 16-10. The Blue Demons cut the lead to two, but was unable to reach the Golden Eagles before Marquette clinched set point with a kill by Allie Barber.
With the match coming down to a fifth and final set, DePaul and Marquette traded points to an 8-8 tie. Marquette put the pressure on the Blue Demons by going on a 5-0 run and taking a 12-8 lead. DePaul brought the score within two, 13-11, thanks to kills from Maxwell and Anderson, but back-to-back points for Marquette sealed the match.
DePaul continues its home stand on Friday, Oct. 21 when the Blue Demons host Creighton in a BIG EAST match. The Blue Demons and Bluejays meet at 7 p.m. CT.
