Blue Demons Prep for Pair of BIG EAST Matches

CHICAGO - The DePaul volleyball team closes a four-match home stand this weekend with BIG EAST matches against Creighton and Providence. On Friday, DePaul welcomes Creighton to McGrath-Phillips Arena to begin the weekend and take part in the Dig Pink match at 7 p.m. CT. The Blue Demons return on Saturday to face Providence on the BIG EAST Digital Network at 7 p.m. CT.
Jasmine King is first in the BIG EAST for hitting percentage at .378. The senior is fourth on the team with 176 kills for a 2.07 kills per set average and only 51 errors.
Colleen Smith leads the team with 12 double-doubles on the year. Smith is first on the team with 9.92 assists per set (fourth in the BIG EAST) and 2.42 digs per set.
The Blue Demons continue to get strong performances from their freshmen. In Saturday's match, Claire Anderson and MacKenzie Savage played in all five sets. Anderson finished with a season-high 42 attacks along with eight kills and eight digs. Savage tallied six digs on the back line.
Volleyball Joins Side-Out Foundation for 2016
The DePaul volleyball program has teamed up with the Side-Out Foundation for another season in 2016 as part of their Dig Pink Campaign. The team has set a goal of $1,000 for this year's campaign. Fans can help the Blue Demons reach their goal of raising $1,000 by visiting the DePaul volleyball team page and clicking on the "Support the Dig Pink Campaign" link under the "More Links" tabs. Funds raised for Side-Out go toward a clinical trial specifically for patients with stage 4 breast cancer, the most advanced form of the disease and the least funded area of research.

Last Time vs. Creighton
Closing the first road weekend of BIG EAST play, DePaul fell in four sets to Creighton Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, 3-1 (25-15, 29-31, 25-21, 25-17). Colleen Smith recorded her third-straight double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs. The senior matched her double-double total from last year. Myah Reed finished with a team-high 14 kills for the Blue Demons. She was followed by Brittany Maxwell with 12, including five blocks.
Scouting The Bluejays
Creighton begins the weekend atop the BIG EAST volleyball standings with an 8-0 record and 14-6 overall. The Bluejays have a conference-best hitting percentage of .262 and leads the conference in assists per set at 13.30 per set and kills per set at 14.45. Lydia Dimke sets the attack for the Bluejays with 11.24 assists per set, second in the BIG EAST. Brittany Witt is fourth in the conference for digs per set at 4.23. In BIG EAST play, Marysa Wilkinson leads the conference with 1.46 blocks per set.

In the first BIG EAST match of the season, DePaul and Providence split the first four sets before DePaul produced a dominant performance in the fifth set to earn the win Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-3). Colleen Smith came up big for the Blue Demons with her fifth double-double of the season with 41 assists and 11 digs. The senior setter added five kills and two blocks to her evening. Brittany Maxwell had a match-high 17 kills. Caitlyn Coffey followed behind with 11 kills and a team-high seven blocks (one solo, six assisted).
Scouting The Friars
Providence earned its first BIG EAST victory of the season last weekend against St. John's and the Friars currently sit at 1-7 in conference play, 13-11 overall. The Friars are first in the BIG EAST for opponent hitting percentage at .180, but ninth in team hitting percentage at .181. Providence is third in the conference with a 15.70 digs per set average. Michelle Cruz is third in the conference with 4.85 digs per set to lead the Friars. Allison Impellizeri is one of only six student-athletes in the conference to average above 1.00 blocks per set. The sophomore owns a 1.05 average and 86 total blocks on the year.
