WASHINGTON, D.C. - Despite a slow start to Friday's road match against Georgetown, the DePaul volleyball team came back to win 3-1 (7-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-17). With the victory, DePaul moves to 13-11 overall and 7-5 in BIG EAST play. Georgetown drops to 6-18 overall and 2-9 in the BIG EAST.
Claire Anderson had a career night for the Blue Demons on Friday. The freshman set a new career high for kills with 12 and tied career highs for digs (eight) and blocks (two).
DePaul tallied 11 blocks in the match and Jasmine King led the way with seven total (six assisted, one solo). Rachel Breault was second on the team with four blocks.
Myah Reed and Caitlyn Coffey each had nine kills to help DePaul to its program-best seventh BIG EAST victory of the season.
The match started out in Georgetown's favor with the Hoyas jumping out to a 7-1 lead. DePaul could not find the rhythm needed to get back into the set as it went on and a final push from Georgetown gave the Hoyas the early lead.
In the second set, both sides battled early to try and earn a lead larger than three, but neither side was successful. A total of 10 ties left the set at 15-all before DePaul claimed a 4-1 run to make the score 19-16. DePaul and Georgetown traded the next six points and the Blue Demons went up by four off a Georgetown attacking error. The Hoyas cut the advantage to two late at 24-22, but Reed secured her sixth kill of the match on set point to even the match.
Georgetown grabbed the early lead in the third set thanks to a 4-0 rally. The Blue Demons battled back to 10-10 with back-to-back kills from Coffey and Anderson. Georgetown and DePaul traded 3-0 rallies to set the score at 13-all. The two sides went on to be deadlocked at points 14 and 15 before DePaul took over the lead and forced a Hoya timeout at 21-16. The timeout helped Georgetown back into the match at 22-22. Two clutch Coffey kills late in the set gave DePaul an opportunity to take the match lead and the Blue Demons cashed in by earning the final point of the set.
A 7-1 run to start the fourth frame put DePaul in prime position to control the set. Georgetown came within three of DePaul at 10-7, but that was as close as the Hoyas would get. The Blue Demons built their lead to eight late in the set, 24-16, off a Georgetown attacking error to earn a chance at match point. After a Symone Speech kill, Anderson responded with her 12th and final kill of the match to earn the win for DePaul.
DePaul remains on the road for Saturday's match against Villanova. After Friday's results, DePaul currently sits in fourth place in the BIG EAST standings, ahead of Villanova. The BIG EAST match between the Blue Demons and Wildcats is set for a 6 p.m. CT start.
