Volleyball Ends Season at Butler

INDIANAPOLIS - The 2016 DePaul volleyball season came to a close Sunday afternoon as the Blue Demons fell to Butler on the road, 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-19). DePaul completes 2016 with a 13-17 overall record and 7-11 in BIG EAST play.
Myah Reed led all attackers with seven kills on a team-high 25 attacks. She added a block and a dig to her afternoon.
Colleen Smith and Haley Bueser tied for the team lead in digs with seven. Smith also recorded 18 assists.
The match opened with both sides tied at seven-all after DePaul secured back-to-back points to tie the match. Butler answered with a 5-1 run and eventually forced DePaul to call a timeout. The Blue Demons found themselves down by nine late in the set, but scored two late points to cut the deficit. Butler sealed the set by earning a kill on set point.
In the second frame, both sides saw themselves locked at 5-5. Butler broke away with a 3-0 rally and DePaul called a timeout. One more rally of four points midway through the set pushed the Bulldogs ahead by six and Butler won the frame off a DePaul attacking error.
DePaul and Butler battled back and forth in the third set, the closest of the afternoon. The Blue Demons used a 4-0 run to earn the early advantage. Butler slowly cut into the DePaul lead and overtook the Blue Demons at 7-6. The two teams traded points over the course of the frame with neither side stringing together a rally of more than three. With the score at 22-16, DePaul made a late push to come within four points of the Bulldogs, but Butler ended the match shortly after with a match-winning kill.
Sunday marked the end of the 2016 season for DePaul. The seven BIG EAST victories are a program-best mark since joining the BIG EAST in 2005.
