DePaul Defeats Rockhurst in Exhibition Game

CHICAGO - Billy Garrett Jr. led DePaul with 26 points in a 79-53 win over Rockhurst in an exhibition game Friday night. Brandon Cyrus added 14 and R.J. Curington chipped in 11 as the Blue Demons outscored the Hawks, 46-26, in the second half.
The Blue Demons started sluggish, but their stingy defense held Rockhurst without a field goal for nearly eight minutes to start the evening. DePaul led throughout the first half and went into the locker room at halftime holding a 33-27 advantage.
DePaul started to pull away in the second half and a three-pointer from the right corner by Brandon Cyrus pushed the advantage to 55-38 forcing Rockhurst to call a time out with just over 10 minutes on the clock.
R.J. Curington finished the game with 11 points that included seven over a two-minute span in the second half. His second three-pointer of the game pushed the Blue Demon advantage to 24 points with six minutes left in the evening.
DePaul led by as many as 28 points late in the game and finished with a 79-53 final score. Garrett added four assists to his team-high 26 points while Cyrus nearly tallied a double-double with 12 points and nine boards. Curington added five rebounds to his 11 points and Levi Cook finished the game with a game-high 11 rebounds along with eight points.
Rockhurst was led by 26 points from Travis House. He was the lone player in double-figures for the Hawks.
DePaul opens the 2016-17 season on Sunday, Nov. 13 against Robert Morris. Start time at McGrath-Phillips Arena is scheduled for 6 p.m. on FS1.
Postgame Notes
- The game was the only exhibition contest of the preseason for the Blue Demons... DePaul opens the 2016-17 campaign on Nov. 13 against Robert Morris (Pa.) at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
- Had this been a regular-season game, Garrett's free throw performance of 14-for-14 would've been just the fifth game in program history with a player not missing a free throw with at least 14 attempts.
- DePaul has won six straight exhibition games.
- The Blue Demons grabbed 45 rebounds and outscored Rockhurst by a margin of 34-6 in the paint.
