Blue Demons Begin Season at UIC Opener Saturday

CHICAGO - The 2016 DePaul cross country season kicks off this weekend with the men's and women's teams racing at the UIC Opener in Romeoville, Ill. on Saturday, Sept. 3. Action at the UIC Opener begins at 10 a.m. CT with the women's race. The men's race follows shortly after at 10:30 a.m. CT.
The 4k women's race and 6k men's race takes place at the Lewis University cross country course. DePaul joins Green Bay, Milwaukee, Loyola, Chicago State and co-hosts UIC and Lewis at the starting line.
For the women's side, Lauren Sharp and Paige Skorseth lead the way to start their senior seasons for the Blue Demons. Skorseth had team-best finishes in three of DePaul's seven races last season, including the season opener at the Badger Season Opener with a time of 16:09.9.
On the men's side, seniors Alex Campanella and Steve McEvilly begin the year leading DePaul in the 6k race. Campanella completed last season as DePaul's top runner at the NCAA Midwest Regional with a time of 32:00.8 on the 10k course.
Saturday's race features plenty of newcomers for the Blue Demons. Graduate student Salomon Wright and freshman Noah Deck make their DePaul debut for the men. The women's race showcases freshmen Batya Beard and Courtney Pickering debuting for DePaul.
Also representing the women's team on Saturday are sophomores Jessica Harris and Caroline Kurdej and junior Sabrina Olsen. Olsen is running in her first cross country event for the Blue Demons this weekend. Juniors Joe Atria, Chris Korabik, Jeremy Lozano and Jake Pecorin and sophomores Sergio Llanes and Daniel Peterson are set to race on Saturday to round out the men's team.
