BIG EAST Play Begins This Weekend for Volleyball

CHICAGO ââ'¬" The 2016 BIG EAST volleyball schedule begins Friday for DePaul when the Blue Demons travel to Providence to face the Friars at 6 p.m. CT. On Sunday, the Blue Demons continue their conference slate at Creighton for a 1 p.m. CT start.
This weekend is the start of an 18-match BIG EAST schedule that features DePaul facing each conference team twice in a home-and-home series. DePaul swept the series against Providence last year and went 0-2 against Creighton.
Lexi Chanos registered a season-high 25 digs against Notre Dame this past Saturday and leads the Blue Demons with 144 digs and a 3.00 digs per set average. The senior is one of two Blue Demons to tally 100-plus digs this year.
DePaul has three student-athletes ranked in the NCAA top-100 for hitting percentage. Caitlyn Coffey is 30th in the nation with a .398 hitting percentage, followed by Jasmine King (.364) and Brittany Maxwell (.354).
Jameson MacPhie and Colleen Smith came away from the Spartan Classic with double-double performances. MacPhie notched her second double-double of the year against Notre Dame when she recorded 11 kills and 10 digs. Smith finished the Michigan State match with 19 assists and 12 digs.

On Friday, Providence will provide a live video feed that is available for premium users. The Friars will also have free live statistics for the match. Last Time vs. Providence
Going on the road for the first time in over a month, the DePaul volleyball team pulled out afour-set victory over Providence Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, 3-1 (14-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-22). Colleen Smith recorded her team-high fourth double-double of the season when she tallied 40 assists and 11 digs for the Blue Demons. Jasmine King had another solid conference match on the day with 13 kills and eight total blocks in the four sets. King finished with a hitting percentage of .542 and no errors.
Scouting The Friars
Providence heads into BIG EAST play with the second-best overall record in the conference at 12-4. The Friars are winners in their last three matches with victories over Fordham, Hartford and Bryant. Megan Onyundo leads the Friars with a 3.11 kills per set average and is the only Providence student-athlete to notch over 400 attacks with 542. Chicyia Clark sets the attack with 564 assists and a 9.89 assists per set average. On the back line, Michelle Cruz is third in the BIG EAST with a 5.13 digs per set average. She is the only BIG EAST student-athlete with over 300 digs on the season. Providence is holding opponents to just a .140 hitting percentage, but is ninth in the BIG EAST with a .189 hitting percentage.
Last Time vs. Creighton
For the final match of an eight-match homestand, DePaul battled the number one team in the BIG EAST Creighton to four sets, but lost 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19) on Nov. 7, 2015. Jasmine King recorded a career-high 14 kills and eight blocks on Saturday night. Brittany Maxwell was the only other Blue Demon to reach double-digit kills. The freshman had 11 on 25 attacks and just one error.
Scouting The Bluejays
The Bluejays and Blue Demons begin conference play after similar non-conference results. Both teams are 6-6 overall heading into the weekend and rank in the top-10 for toughest non-conference schedules in the NCAA based on opponent win-loss records. Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Jaali Winters is off to a strong start with 3.05 kills per set and 3.11 digs per set. Winters leads the Bluejays with 134 kills, followed by Taryn Kloth at 2.97 kills per set and 116 kills. Setter Lydia Dimke is second in the BIG EAST with 11.11 assists per set. Creighton is third in the BIG EAST for assists per set (12.80), kills per set (13.93) and digs per set (16.04).
