Blue Demons Drop Game to Marquette

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Tre'Darius McCallum led five Blue Demons in double-figures, but it wasn't enough as DePaul dropped a 92-79 decision to visiting Marquette. McCallum's 21 led the way while Billy Garrett Jr. added 17 points.
DePaul took an early 14-7 lead behind two three-pointers from Eli Cain and McCallum followed by four Brandon Cyrus points on layups in transition.
Following a Marquette timeout, the Golden Eagles put together a 9-0 run, hitting two three-pointers, getting to the foul line and converting on a layup to pull ahead 16-14. The visitors continued with their hot shooting, extending their run to 18-0 with 9:55 left, giving the Golden Eagles a 25-14 advantage.
Marquette (15-8, 6-5 BIG EAST) maintained its lead throughout the afternoon by knocking down 14 three-pointers that included makes in seven of the first 10 attempts from deep to account for 21 of their first 36 points.
McCallum opened the second half for DePaul by hitting two three's, but Marquette matched the host's scoring output, holding onto a six-point advantage at 57-51 with 15 minutes to go.
DePaul (8-15, 1-9 BIG EAST) pulled to within six points at 67-73, but the Golden Eagles answered with two three's that stretched the visitor's lead back to 12 with 4:06 left.
McCallum's added seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot to his career-high 21 points while Garrett recorded five assists and three boards in addition to his 17 points. Joe Hanel and Brandon Cyrus chipped in 12 points each and Cain finished with 10 points and seven assists.
Andrew Rowsey led Marquette with 22 points and Haanif Cheatham added 15 and eight rebounds.
Up next for the Blue Demons is a road game at Xavier on Wednesday evening. Following the midweek road game, DePaul returns to Allstate Arena for back-to-back games against Creighton on Feb. 11 and Villanova on Feb. 13.

- DePaul's streak with a three-pointer extended to 730 games on a three by Eli Cain to start the scoring the Blue Demons.
- Brandon Cyrus reached double-figures for the second time in the last three games... he has six games this season with at least 10 points.
- Billy Garrett Jr. reached the 1,500-point and 400-assist plateaus becoming second player in program history in that category... Brandon Young (2010-14) totaled 1,899 points and 521 assists in his career.
- Joe Hanel recorded third game in double-figures... his 12 point matched his career high.
- Tre'Darius McCallum's 21 points represented the first 20-point game this season by a player that is not Eli Cain or Billy Garrett Jr.
- The game was No. 120 between DePaul and Marquette... Marquette leads the series, 74-46... the Golden Eagles swept the season series.
