DePaul Takes Opener 8-0 Against Providence

CHICAGO- Softball took the first game of its weekend series with Providence on Friday afternoon with a 8-0 victory in six innings.
Dylan Christensen led the Blue Demons (20-16, 5-4 BIG EAST) with two doubles and two RBI. Micah Fitzgerald went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Jessica Cothern added two hits.
Providence's (12-20, 3-7 BIG EAST), Nadia Kemp and Mackensie Compton added a hit each.
Zoch earned the win in the circle for for DePaul, allowing just one hit in five innings and striking out eight. Krista Dalgarn pitched in the sixth inning, striking out two.
Christina Ramirez suffered the loss for Providence (12-20, 3-7 BIG EAST).
The Blue Demons jumped ahead in the first inning as Nicole Pihl hit a two-run homer over the right field fence with Fitzgerald on base.
DePaul pushed its lead to 3-0 in the second as Cothern led off with a single, eventually scoring on a Brianna Viles RBI fielder's choice.
The Blue Demons added three runs in the third inning. With one out and runners on second and third, Dylan Christensen scorched a two-run double into the right center gap, extending the Blue Demons lead 5-0. Cothern then pushed another run across for DePaul with an RBI single up the middle for Dylan Christensen to plate home.
Dylan Christensen led off the fifth with her second double of the game, coming around to score on a wild pitch for the Blue Demons to take a 7-0 lead.
The game ended in the bottom of the sixth, as the mercy rule took affect on DePaul's eighth unanswered run. With Kayla Landwehrmier on third, Haydn Christensen on second and Micah Fitzgerald on first, a fielder's choice allowed Landwehrmier to plate home.
DePaul and Providence resume for game two later in the afternoon.
