CHICAGO – DePaul softball dropped an 8-0 decision in five innings to St. John's Friday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium. The Blue Demons were limited to just one hit and two baserunners, while the Red Storm used an 11-hit performance to secure the series victory.
Sophomore outfielder Jolie Adams led DePaul at the plate, reaching base in two of her three at-bats. Adams drew a walk and added a base hit in the fourth inning to extend her hit streak to five games.
Senior right-hander Kelly Greene got the nod in the circle and went 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Bella Nigey entered in relief in the fourth inning with two on and nobody out, recording one out before giving way to Hannah Messer. The sophomore tossed 1.2 innings, surrendering four runs on five hits.
How It Happened
St. John's (25-12, 6-5 BIG EAST) grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on a DePaul error that allowed the runner to come all the way home. DePaul's defense responded by retiring seven of the next eight Red Storm batters following the opening run.
The Red Storm added on in the fourth, using a double to center field to score a runner who had walked earlier in the inning. A bunt loaded the bases before a base hit and an RBI groundout extended the lead to 4-0.
In the fifth, St. John's strung together five hits in a four-run frame to push its advantage to 8-0, where it would remain for the remainder of the contest.
