Blue Demons cruise to second win of season heading into Penn State game on Thursday
CHICAGO – DePaul cruised to a decisive 91-63 win over Morgan State on Thursday night behind a combined 46 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists from Eli Cain and Max Strus. The duo led the Blue Demons to their second win in as many games this season.
Cain totaled 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists while Strus finished with his second straight game of 25 points. Strus added nine boards and three assists to his scoring total as both players knocked down five three's apiece during the game.
It was all DePaul from the opening tip as the Blue Demons jumped ahead behind a pair of threes from both Strus and Cain to take a 20-6 lead with 12:36 left in the half. The Blue Demons used a 17-2 run to get to that point, exploding after the score was 4-3 in the opening two minutes.
Morgan State (0-3) cut the deficit to six points, but that was as close as they would get in the opening half as Devin Gage picked off an errant Morgan State pass and converted a breakaway dunk that extended the lead to 32-17 for the largest advantage of the game at that point.
Gage turned in a solid performance with 13 points and nine assists while committing just two turnovers in just over 29 minutes of action. Jaylen Butz led the Blue Demons with nine rebounds to go along with seven points. As a team, DePaul outrebounded Morgan State by a margin of 52-26 while totaling 22 assists on 35 field goals during the game.
DePaul (2-0) kept its foot on the gas, outscoring the Bears 8-3 over the final three and a half minutes to go into the break with a 39-20 lead. Cain led all game scorers with 11 points through the opening period while Strus chipped in 10 points.
The Blue Demons didn't waste any time opening up the game in the second half as DePaul improved its lead to 30 points at 65-35 as a time out halted action with 11:12 left in the game.
With 3:18 left in the game, the Blue Demons took their largest lead of the evening at 35 points, cruising to the win in a game that was never in doubt in the second half.
Martez Cameron led the Bears with 11 points while Malik Miller added 10 for Morgan State.
DePaul returns to action Thursday as they host Penn State in the Gavitt Tipoff Games. Start time at Wintrust Arena is scheduled for 8 p.m. on FS1 and WSCR (670 AM).
