Eight DePaul players scored in double figures Monday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena
CHICAGO – You could tell these Blue Demons were ready to move on from preseason practices to an actual game.
And even though this was an exhibition matchup, McGrath-Phillips Arena partisans got a sneak preview of what the 2018-19 season could look like after DePaul dismantled NAIA national semifinalist Saint Xavier 140-62 Monday night.
Eight Blue Demons scored in double figures led by double-double senior forward Mart'e Grays with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Chante Stonewall added 21 points as DePaul's starting frontcourt combined for 43 points and 13 boards.
Freshman Sonya Morris had quite a debut in a DePaul uniform with 19 points while sophomore Dee Bekelja finished with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
Rebekah Dahlman and freshman Maya Stovall each contributed 12 points with Dahlman also adding a game-high nine assists. Tanita Allen's 11 points and 10 from Ashton Millender rounded out the eight double-figure scorers.
It didn't take long for coach Doug Bruno's team to set the tone. A 25-2 run covering five minutes propelled DePaul to a 27-5 lead late in the first quarter.
From there, it snowballed with the Blue Demons building a 66-30 cushion by halftime. Outscoring Saint Xavier 39-17 in the third quarter and 35-15 in the final 10 minutes resulted in the 78-point final margin.
The Blue Demons shot nearly 60 percent from the floor and almost 40 percent from three-point range.
Bruno would like nothing better than for his players to carry over Monday night's momentum into Friday's regular-season opener against NCAA tournament team Green Bay which is receiving votes in the national polls.
Tip time is 7 p.m. at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
